big top birthday/circus party
Circus-related party supplies:
Hosting a circus - big top birthday themed party is so much fun! Here are some ideas for cute invitations, circus party themed decorations, great menu ideas, activities and much more!
Invitations
A big ticket stub on red paper- "ADMIT ONE" on top in big letters on it. Write in: "Please Join us.. for Haley's Big Top Birthday Party"! ~or~ Use Circus stickers to decorate white cardstock. To make the card, just cut red cardstock into rectangles (to fit envelopes). Use a round 1" paper punch at each corner (this will take a little practice to get it right- use scrap paper to practice).
Decorations
Red streamer to make look like a "big top" see photo in right column; lots of red, blue, and yellow helium filled balloons; red, blue, and yellow plastic tablecloths; Drawn posters (on white poster board with markers) of "See the Amazing Elephants" and the "Ferocious Lions"

Tape red streamer from center of ceiling to the corner of the wall and ceiling all the way around the room to make the room look like it is enlcosed by a circus "tent". Add balloons to the center to cover up the tape.

Here we strung twine from one side to the other and draped a blue bedspread (from a second-hand store) over the twine. We added the polka dot fabric (bought on clearance 50 cents a yard) over the top. We made the cereal box-circus train (idea from Plum Party). We used plastic popcorn boxes for straws and silverware. We filled clear glass containers with "circus" candy and added coordinating fabric ribbon. Used a cupcake stand for Clown cupcakes, and added a string of "circus" beads found at a second-hand store.

This circus centerpiece was easy to make. Start with a plastic popcorn container. Add festive circus-themed tissue paper, crumpled up. Stick in a few balloons, party blowers, and some curly ribbon. We then stuck in this old fashioned swirly pop, and hot glued miniature circus animals. click above for a closer view. |
Menu
hotdogs, cotton candy, and peanuts in the shell
Party Favors
Popcorn boxes or Top Hats filled with: foam clown nose; jungle animals; box of animal crackers; punch balls; and bubbles.
Activities
Pin the nose on the clown ~ (you can find a poseable cardboard clown decoration at dollar stores and the like~) Tape to the wall. Using red paper, cut out round circles for a clown nose. stick with 2 way tape. Have each guest try to stick the nose closest to it's actual place on the clown's face.
Here is one of many clown costumes, accessories, and wigs that Frank Bee Costumes offers... click on the clown to view "the costumeman's" collection! This particular clown costume is $49.99, complete costumes start at $21.99!
Clown toss ~ (Find a large square box, draw a huge clown face on the front. Next, cut a hole for the mouth (big enough for bean bags to get through easily). Sew 3 square bean bags out of primary color polka dot material, using rice or beans for the filler. Have each guest stand a certain distance back from the box which is fair. Give each guest 3 tries to get it in the clown's mouth.
Face painting ~ using face crayons like this are the easiest to work with ~ you could also hire a clown ~ or have a friend dress up like one
At Josh's party, we filled a large box with clown wigs, big ties, funny glasses, striped shirts, and the like, and had the kids dress up and take pictures! See some of these pictures here.
We also did balloon animals at Josh's party- HUGE hit! The teens and adults were even trying to make them, they were having a great time! You can purchase a kit to make balloon animals-- through Oriental Trading - approx $12.95
